Horticulture Therapy: Coleus Cutting Workshop  (back)

Description:
Are the winter doldrums getting you down? Looking for a little color to perk you up? How about getting your hands dirty and creating something you'll be able to enjoy throughout the coming spring/summer? Consider joining the CALS and OHR Wellness Teams in a Horticulture Therapy activity!

Mike Maddox, Master Gardener Program Director, is offering a two-part workshop that will bring you to the DC Smith Greenhouse to get your spring planting juices flowing. Participants will make their own cuttings of coleus plants, root them, and then return a month later to plant their cutting to take home and enjoy throughout the season.

Coleus is a very popular container plant for the home gardens and is available in a variety of dazzling colors and textures. It's a great plant for beginning gardeners, yet still offers plenty of visual appeal used by more experienced gardens, too. The workshop will consist of two 1-hour meetings. For the first, participants will select their plants from the DC Smith Greenhouse collection and make their own cuttings of the plant to root. A few weeks later, the second meeting will have participants lift and replant their new plants to take home for enjoyment in their own home garden.

In addition to demonstrating these gardening techniques, Mike will also share information about horticulture therapy and can answer your gardening questions.
