Checking candidate references is a step which is sometimes short-changed in the hiring process. Jim Stratton, former Director of Classified Human Resources advised, "Be sure that the references include people who have recently supervised the candidate. Don't count on extraneous information that you may have heard in favor or not in favor of a candidate. You need to talk to references to determine if this person has a good chance of success in your job. Before calling the references, have a set of questions to ask based on the position description."
