Do you feel like you need more of a challenge in your career?
Do you want to learn about opportunities that can help you?

No matter where you are in your own professional development, the UW-Madison Office of Human Resource Development has recently created a solution to help you.

Introducing: Competencies, a new tool for your own professional development.  By using this assessment tool, you will be able to identify exactly where you stand in terms of your “competency level” in each of the seven categories that we have defined here.  Each competency level includes various levels of understanding, skill level, and action.

Managers’ Competency Skill Level and Definition Matrix

  1. Competency (Level 1): Achievement of basic skills and knowledge expectations in a given competency area
  2. Fluency (Level 2): Achievement of a more complete level of knowledge and skill in a given area, coupled with a sustained application of such competency over time
  3. Mastery (Level 3): Achievement of a higher order level of knowledge and skill in a given area, sustained over time, and demonstrated in a variety of supervisory situations and applications
  4. Mastery in Leadership (Level 4): Providing sustained leadership in a demonstrated mastery of skills and knowledge of a given competency area, including effective modeling and teaching to staff subordinates and colleagues
